REVISED--The First Charter of Virginia, 1606

Author: King James and various members of the council.

Audience: Residents living in Virginia and those related to the council.

Tone: Authoritative. Old English vocabulary. Some words were used that are scarcely heard now-a-days. Formal writing that suites the document.

Purpose/Context: The purpose of the Virginia Charter was to tell people of the different regulations and guidelines that were expected to be followed by the people. It mentions the need for good land to start plantations and habitation on and also how people needed to either pay or trade for any merchandise they may have wanted. There was also a petition that would grant people permission to do different things.

Persuasion: (ethos) Emotion is shown when the author uses more describing words to express a particular item or event. Also, when describing some of the rules the author goes into great detail with some information that isn't exactly necessary but it is included to make the piece more persuasive.
(pathos) The authors shows credibility with all the information given by taking the time to explain many things and go further in depth. Character is shown with the older-english vocabulary used by the authors.
(logos) Logic is shown in the document because the authors make everything fit together well. Things just seem logical for example, having to pay for merchandise is normal and therefore logical.

The Cruelties of the Spaniards Committed in America

The article claims the Spaniards were extremely cruel to the Natives when they discovered them, and I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I agree that they were cruel and went too far with torturing and murdering innocent people. They were barbaric animals that didn't care who got in their they, they would kill them anyway. On the other hand, I still insist that some of what they did was necessary for them to be successful with their plans. But still, some of the things they did or told others to do were extremely graphic and disturbing, things that should never be done to another human being. The Spaniards were truly savages that would do anything to get their way and did not care for anyone elses well-being.

My Writing Philosophy

My writing philosophy will include all the techniques I will use to be as successful as possible. I will have certain self-expectations that I would like to live up to. I would like to actually enjoy writing even if the topic is one I am not particularly interested in. My motivation will give me the confidence and security to write what I really want to and not be afraid to express what I think. I believe people can develop quite a bit of who they truly are through writing. I will become a better writer by using multiple types of writing styles to expand my knowledge of the different ways you can write. Grades only effect your writing when it's necessary to get a good grade on the piece of writing. I'm not saying that I don't care about my grades, I'm just saying there is more to writing than just getting a exceeding grade. I have goals for myself and I will work my hardest to try and meet them.

English Composition as a Happening

Charles Deemer's main idea is how he wants to improve the set up of the schooling systems. He feels strongly that the teachers and students should be seen as equals and be able to communicate without any awkward barriers. The common idea of a classroom is the teacher in front of the class behind a podium, lecturing the class on some random topic that they really don't care to hear about and pay attention to. Also, the teacher shouldn't always be the only one teaching the class. Sometimes the students could be teaching other students to show their knowledge on certain topics and just to mix things up a bit. If the students and teachers work as a team more often the learning environment would improve greatly. Another point Deemer made is that students shouldn't just sit back and never give any imput. They need to show that they are actually learning and express what their feelings are about the topic. By everyone working together towards a common goal, schooling will be closer to the way Deemer dreams it to be.

Deemer supports his position with details about how schools are today. He then adds details on how the schools today are doing so many things wrong and includes ways that schools could improve their ways of teaching.

PSEC application essay

A social issue that I am passionate about is the struggling children and adults all throughout the world that cannot afford to provide their families with food, shelter, protection, and education for their children. I wanted to help them have a better life, be able to live a healthy life style and not suffer everyday because of their lack of money. My family and I signed up to help sponsor 3 children from different areas of the world through Compassion and World Vision, which are programs that allow you to get to know the children you are helping.

My family and I sponsor 2 little girls and a little boy, all from different countries. We get to send letters back and forth to each other so we can get to know them and they can get to know us. With those letters we can further understand how they personally are struggling to survive and stay healthy. By sponsoring children for a small amount of money each month we provide the children and their families with a better shelter to live in, they are guaranteed food everyday so they don’t have to worry about not being able to eat, and also the money we send is helping the children in the family get an education. By sending letters to the children they know that they are loved and cared about by people they don’t even know that are half way around the world from them.

I love helping children and their families live a better life. It brings joy to my heart to know that I am changing their lives for the better. I feel as though I am actually making a difference in this world and I am helping to change and improve the lives of people I don’t even know because they don’t deserve to live like they have in the past. Everyone deserves a fresh start and I get to help them start over.
